Prior to seeing Dr. Smith, I felt extremely defeated, tired, unmotivated, and just plain gross from the inside out. I was 288 pounds – 12 pounds away from 300 pounds! I couldn’t run and play with my 5 year old son. He would have to slow down so I could keep up. I couldn’t pick him up, and while I blamed this on him growing up, it was really me that kept growing. When sleeping, I would literally have to help my stomach turn with me to roll over. Laying on my side hurt my hips to the point of not being able to sleep or walk well. Also because of my weight, an old foot fracture hurt constantly – especially with walking.
My sister told me about Dr. Smith and Mid-America Weight Management. She told me how successful she was in helping people lose weight, learn a new lifestyle, and keep the weight off. I thought what (besides the weight) do I have to lose, and made an appointment. Dr. Smith took the time to listen to my problems with food and exercise. She never judged or criticized me when I explained my out of control eating habits and lack of exercise. She explained what is really in our food and how it affects our body. Blood work was done, and I was a point away from pre-diabetic. She started me on a low-carbohydrate diet and medication to help with my appetite control. She also helped me start exercising.
I started on the diet plan immediately. Exercise came slow initially as I couldn’t breathe, and it hurt to walk. I didn’t stop. I gave it 110%, and in the first month, I lose 25 pounds. I could go on for a long time about the ups and downs of the last 9 months. It hasn’t all been easy. At times, I literally wanted to cry. My body was so sore, I wanted to lay in bed and watch TV, but that was and is no longer an option.
I have now lost 130 pounds, and gone from a size 26 to a size 9. I work out in the mornings before work so I don’t miss family time. My strength, endurance, and muscle definition have all drastically improved. I can do 4 miles on the elliptical in 30 minutes. I can run and play with my son. I can carry him, and his little legs can wrap around me. My pain is gone. My hips and foot haven’t hurt in months. I can breathe again. I can run. I feel amazing! I no longer dread clothes shopping – it is actually rewarding. I even bought a jacket in the little boys section for myself!
I’ve learned so much about processed foods and how to cook and eat clean. This is a lifestyle change, not a diet. I’ve been incorporating more healthy carbohydrates back into my diet the last few months. To anyone that feels like they’ve hit rock bottom, or like there is no coming back – I am here to tell you that you can. Dr. Smith has helped me every step of the way. Seeing her monthly, and knowing that she really cares how I am eating and exercising and sleeping has been so important. Without her help and guidance, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
